The William Blake Archive
The Archive at a Glance

Unless noted otherwise, measurements given beneath each plate in the illuminated books record the size of the plate, as indicated by the platemark. Measurements given beneath the images of all other works record the sizes of the original images (engraved, written, painted, or drawn), including all clearly associated inscriptions (such as inscribed titles and imprints in engravings). All measurements are in centimeters, height followed by width.

Copy designations in the Archive for Blake's illuminated books—e.g., copy A, copy B, etc.—follow the copy designations recorded in G. E. Bentley, Jr., Blake Books: Annotated Catalogues of William Blake's Writings (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1977).

Throughout the Blake Archive, references are made to the following standard editions and catalogues by author's last name (and title, if necessary).

Bentley
G. E. Bentley, Jr. Blake Books: Annotated Catalogues of William Blake's Writings. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1977. The plate numbering of Blake's illuminated books in this catalogue accords with the numbering in William Blake's Writings, ed. Bentley, 2 vols. (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1978) and in Bentley, Blake Books Supplement (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1995).
Butlin
Martin Butlin. The Paintings and Drawings of William Blake. 2 vols. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1981. References to this standard catalogue of Blake's drawings and paintings are by entry number.
Erdman
The Complete Poetry and Prose of William Blake. Edited by David V. Erdman. Newly rev. ed. New York: Doubleday, 1988. The plate numbering of Blake's illuminated books in this edition does not accord in all cases with the numbering in Erdman's The Illuminated Blake (Garden City, New York: Anchor Books, 1974).
Essick
Robert N. Essick. The Separate Plates of William Blake: A Catalogue. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1983. References to this standard catalogue of Blake's separate engravings and etchings are by entry number (roman numerals) and copy designation (usually a combination of a number followed by a letter).
Keynes
Geoffrey Keynes and Edwin Wolf 2nd. William Blake's Illuminated Books: A Census. New York: Grolier Club, 1953. The plate numbering of Blake's illuminated books in this catalogue accords with the numbering in Keynes, A Bibliography of William Blake (New York: Grolier Club, 1921), but does not accord with the numbering in The Complete Writings of William Blake, ed. Keynes (London: Oxford University Press, 1966).
