There is No Natural Religion, object 3 (Bentley a3, Erdman a3, Keynes a3)

Sector CD
plate Illustration:

The center of the design is dominated by a seated figure, probably female, wearing a long gown. Her legs are crossed and she holds a book or tablet on her right knee and may be writing or drawing on it with her left hand. On the right is a much smaller standing figure, probably a young girl. She is gowned and may be holding a book or piece of paper from which she reads. On the left is a figure—perhaps a young boy—lying on the ground but with his torso propped up on his left elbow. He looks down and may be reading or writing in a book. There are two trees near the right margin and one (perhaps with a vine around its trunk) near the left margin. The design would seem to relate to the theme of "Education" (E2) in the text.

Component (Sector CD)

Keywords: female, gown, sitting, holding, twisted, legs crossed, knees, drawing, writing, book, tablet

A seated and gowned figure, probably female, holds a book or tablet on her prominent right knee and may be writing or drawing on it with her left hand. Her legs are crossed and her upper body is slightly twisted to the right.

Component (Sector D)

Keywords: female, child, young, gown, standing, holding, facing left, facing down, reading, book, paper

A gowned figure, perhaps a young girl, stands right of the larger, seated figure. She looks down and to the left and perhaps reads in a book or a piece of paper she holds in her hands.

Component (Sector C)

Keywords: male, child, young, lying, holding, arm braced, facing down, reading, writing, book

A figure, perhaps a young boy, lies on the ground left of the larger seated figure. His torso is propped up on his left elbow. He looks down and may be reading or writing (with his left hand) in a book.

Component (Sector D)

Keywords: tree, branch, leaf

Two trees, with indications of branches and leaves, grow near the right margin.

Component (Sector C)

Keywords: tree, branch, leaf, vine, spiral

A tree, with indications of branches and leaves, grows near the left margin. There may be avine spiraling around this tree.

Sector AB
interlinear Illustration:

Several representational images hover around or on the letters of the heading ("The Argument"). These are, from left to right, a standing figure facing right and leaning against the vertical of the "T"; a figure, probably winged and thus perhaps an angel, hovering above the space between the two words; a figure standing but leaning against the left diagonal of the "A" and with one arm reaching toward the hovering figure (who may be reaching down to him); a figure right of the right diagonal of the "A," probably reaching up and to the right toward a bird hovering above the "u" and "m." It is unclear whether we are viewing the figures on the "A" from the front or the back. The first and last letters of the heading terminate in vine-like decorations.

Component (Sector A)

Keywords: standing, leaning, arm raised at 135 degrees, facing right

A figure stands within the "T" of "The" in the heading. He or she faces to the right and leans, with at least one arm raised, against the vertical of the letter.

Component (Sector A)

Keywords: standing, leaning, reaching, arm raised vertically, arm raised horizontally

A figure, winged and thus perhaps an angel, hovers between the two words of the heading. He or she may be looking and reaching down toward the figure just below and to the right.

Component (Sector A)

Keywords: standing, reaching, arm raised at 135 degrees, arm raised horizontally

A figure stands just right of the second diagonal of the "A" in "Argument." It is unclear whether we are seeing the figure from the front or the back. His or her arm on the right reaches up and to the right toward the bird. The figure's arm on the left may also be raised to hold onto the letter.

Component (Sector B)

Keywords: bird, flying, wing, swan, stork, crane, tail

A bird with extended wings flies above the "u" and "m" of "Argument." The direction of its flight is unclear, but the long extensions both right and left suggest a long neck (hence, a swan, crane, or stork?) and a long tail.

Component (Sector A)

Keywords: vine

The ends of the "T" on the far left terminate in vine-like decorations.

Component (Sector B)

Keywords: vine

The ends of the "t" terminate in vine-like decorations.
